* This report is based on research conducted by the “Safeguarding the Heritage of the Near East Initiative,” funded by the US Department of State. Monthly reports reflect reporting from a variety of sources and may contain unverified material. As such, they should be treated as preliminary and subject to change.
Key points from this report:
- Tunnel bomb in the Old City of Aleppo destroyed a modern structure near Sabaa Bahrat Square and also, apparently, the adjacent Khan at-Tutun (18th century AD) and As-Sinjir Mosque (1921 rebuild of early 15th century mosque).
- Mausoleum of Imam Nawawi in Nawa (Deraa Governorate) destroyed by Jabhat al-Nusra. Although many reports have dated this structure to the 13th century AD, ASOR CHI has determined that the structure is modern. This high profile deliberate destruction, widely covered by international news media, may mark an increase in the use of this tactic by Jabhat al-Nusra.
