Sponsors receive recognition in the Digital Welcome Packet, during the opening welcome remarks, priority table placement in the Exhibit Hall and priority logo placement on the website. Chris Farrar writes archaeologically-based historical fiction set in the period of the Hebrew Bible. Many of the attendees of this conference have shared their expertise with him. The fruits of that sharing can be found at his table in the exhibits area in the form of two novels. By the Waters of Babylon follows twelve-year-old Ya’el on her long march to exile from Jerusalem to Babylon in 586 BCE. Light of Exile tells the story of four youngsters fleeing from deadly danger after the collapse of the Babylonian Empire in 539. Chris will also be leading a roundtable on using fiction as a tool for broadening public support for archaeological fieldwork.

I do pen and ink archaeological illustration and hand lettered maps. I went to school to be an archaeologist (BA philosophy and anthropology, University of Illinois, Urbana), but got distracted and went into the nuts and bolts end of the commercial art business. I’m also a calligrapher. Missing archaeology, I started doing archaeological illustration in the early ’90s and have been ever since. I have a distinguished client list. I also teach successful workshops: most years since 1999 at the SHA conference, also at the Oriental Institute, SAA, California BLM, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. I’m also a jazz flutist and a lute soloist, but that’s another story.
